Work modality

Work modality refers to how companies organise their roles and workplaces. Depending on where work is carried out, three main modalities can be distinguished: on‑site, remote, and hybrid.

On‑site work

  • Characteristics: Work is performed at the company’s premises, with fixed schedules and direct supervision.
  • Advantages: Fast communication, immediate teamwork, access to physical resources.
  • Disadvantages: Daily commuting, less flexibility.
  • Typical companies: Manufacturing, retail, hospitality, healthcare, customer-facing offices, or organisations handling non-digitised confidential information.

Remote work

  • Characteristics: Work is carried out outside the office, usually from home, using digital tools to communicate and deliver results.
  • Advantages: Time and cost savings from commuting, flexible schedules.
  • Disadvantages: Reduced social interaction, risk of isolation, requires strong self-management.
  • Typical companies: Tech startups, digital marketing agencies, software companies, international consultancies.

Hybrid work

  • Characteristics: Combines office-based workdays and remote workdays according to a schedule or project needs.
  • Advantages: Balance between in-person interaction and flexibility, helps retain talent.
  • Disadvantages: Requires coordination and clear rules to avoid confusion.
  • Typical companies: Large corporations, technology firms, consultancies, multinationals with distributed teams.
